Did you know September 6, is celebrated as ‘Read a Book’ day? The idea behind this celebration is to encourage youngsters to read books.
One of my hobbies is to read. As a child, I read a lot of comic books. I started my journey of reading books when I received ‘The Famous Five’ by Enid Blyton as a gift for my First Holy Communion. From there, I moved on to read Nancy Drew, The Hardy boys and stories by Charles Dickens. As I grew older, I indulged myself into reading books by Dan Brown, Chetan Bhagat, Shiv Khera, Salman Rushdie, John Grisham, spiritual books like Sr. Faustina’s Dairy and so on.
People who are passionate about reading don’t require encouragement for reading. But those who don’t read, will need a lot. You may find it boring but you won’t understand what you’re missing and losing out on unless you start reading.
For a beginner, it is important to pick a good book. Once you find yourselves one, you will look for more and later this can turn into a good habit. I can tell you, this habit is better than anything else in life and the joy you find is like no other.
What you should read totally depends on your interest. If you Google, you will not be disappointed to find a long list of books. Just ask yourself what your interests are, whether it is mystery, information, action/adventure, fiction, science fiction, non-fiction, comedy, fantasy, romance, historical, horror/gothic, psychological/philosophical or poetry. If you can’t make up your mind, then start with comics or children’s books and then go on to novels.
Why is it important to read?
Reading is an exercise for your mind, just like how workout is for your body. You learn new words, which help in vocabulary development. Reading also helps to develop communication skills. You become more confident to share your opinions and ideas. It can also melt away stress. A good writer has the ability to take you into their world and you will visualize the story as if you’re watching a movie.
Some books are so inspirational, they have the power to change your attitude towards life, the way you think and sometimes, they can change your life too. The benefits of reading are so many, but you can only experience them once you start reading. I would like to conclude with this beautiful quote by Plato “Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”
Hope I could encourage you enough to grab a book today.
